I was interviewing a large, heavyset man. He was sitting at a table wearing a charcoal grey suit and white shirt. I was sitting on the table edge, and my wife was sitting in a chair to my left. I handed him a plate of food. He ate the food with his fingers, wiping the plate and stuffing small leftovers into his mouth. The whole scene was quite disgusting. With my arms folded, I smugly asked him: “How did you get selected for this interview?” He looked up, handed me his wrinkled resume stapled to a two-page flier, and said, "Someone just told me to come to a party.” And as he said this, I could hear the voice of a black preacher telling everyone to come to a great party, a feast, a banquet table set for everyone.
As he spoke these passionate words, I could feel the grace and mercy of God. I started to cry so deeply that it felt like my spirit was being wrenched out of my body. I was overwhelmed by the presence of God, and I realized that God’s gift of salvation comes to anyone who shows up. We need to do nothing more, and we need to be nothing more. All we need to do is believe by faith in God’s salvation. We do not even need to understand, just to come.
